Questions on 8 cycle - sorry in digest mode so am slow

Does engine NOT have air pump?
Does exhaust have multiple EGO sensors -
In particular - above the cat and either in the cat or just aft of it

If yes, then I suspect the answer and the ANSWER.

If no, then the probable reason is for fuel economy (the answer).
Dropping fuel to a cylinder(s) on a random basis can significantly raise the
part throttle fuel economy. This is because the firing cylinders need more
fuel and air to generate the same power without the dropped cylinder(s).
The greater charge increase's the effective compression ratio ( which can be
as low as 2 to 1 or less) in the firing cylinders. If this is under
computer control, no error codes would show, no malfunction on scope as
ignition would fire into air filled cylinder anyway. The dry cylinder(s)
would also benefit by having lower pumping friction because of the lower
throttling work. Overall, part throttle economy would go up, and emissions
would go down (the increased effective compression ratio results in a faster
flame front which reduces the time for generation of bad stuff and allow
more EGR before bad things happen to its momma)
