Excuse me for jumping into this thread. (evne though there is hardly
anything EFI related here).

Well, my guess is that the AC receiver/drier was not changed and the system
wasn't flushed clean of R12 and R12 compressor oil before the R134a was put
into the system. This is the simplest scenario where the A/C system gets
daaged. I believe that the R12 compressor oil reacts with R134 creating a
goop like substance, hence the damage.

Agreed, but it has to be done correctly and as you already entioned, it
doesn't work as well.
