The 2.8/3.1 were also used in some Isuzu SUVs.  So you might be able to
use an Isuzu transmission too.  (Wait - that's been done already!  GM
used/uses an Isuzu manual transaxle in some small cars.)

I wonder what sort of EFI Isuzu used on the 2.8/3.1.
