Larry Widmer's "Soft head" swirl technology

I have tried a bit of that from time to time, and not had any success as
far as performance goes, although we did see a slight gain in fuel
mileage on a Mustang we tried it on, but it seemed to run a bit rich at
WOT. There just seems to be too much restriction in that kind of system
to make any real difference. By the time you open things up enough so it
can breath properly, then you loose your bottom end punch (torque), and
seems to run out on the top end. I gave up on it as I am sure that if
there was anything to it, some of the aftermarket head companies would
have them out and pushing them hard. Personaly I still like the
"golf-ball" approach(i.e.-dimpling the ports to smooth out the air flow
and keep the gas in suspention better).
