	I am about ready to start making telemetry for my race car, what I plan =
on using is an analog to digital converter connected to the parallel =
port, and just write a small program in Basic to store the variables in =
a text file and then in Visual Basic I can easily display, manipulate or =
just have VB control Excel to do all the hard work.  I just planned on =
strapping a laptop, or an old computer in the car and just letting it =
run.  I am also going to have the computer run a timer that will display =
the time in the bottom corner of the video camera so I can then go back =
and find points on the camera and see what the engine was doing or =
vice-versa.  For the A/D I am going to use the ADC0831 with a 4051 =
Multiplexer so I can have 8 inputs.  Plus other regular TTL lines about =
5 in and 7 out of the Parellel port.  If anyone has ever had a similar =
set up as to this one, please share your thoughts.  I would like to know =
if a simple frequency to voltage converter would be acurate enough to =
measure RPM.  Also, the race car hs two 45DCOE6 Webers and I was =
wondering if I could use a O2 sensor, or maybe a wide range sensor when =
that project finishes to measure A/F ratio and then make the changes in =
the weber, I know the fuel curve has a flat spot in it.  Also could =
someone please explain the advantages of a Wide Range 02 meter as =
opposed to a lambda 02 sensor, thanks.   I will keep the group posted on =
my data logging and will post my circuits and findings on the ftp site =
when I am done, by the way, my cone shaped hat has a whole in it, and =
the ftp adress fell out, could someone tell me where it is, thanks.

HAM radio is certainly one good solution for this need.  I've taken it a
step further, and starting to build my own circuit.

For the RF components, I ordered a paired RF system from
www.linxtechnologies.com, which convert serial data directly to RF, then
unconvert them on the other end.  They have three sets of modules, and =
for
experimentation, I went with the cheapest system possible, but it only
supports 9600 baud on a good day.  Ideally, I'd like to use the more
expensive 900MHZ version, which can take 56KB, and will do so in the =
final
release.

To pass the data to and from the circuits, one can utilizing a PC's =
serial
port, or an embedded processor's par to serial interface chip, either =
built
in or external, depending on your configuration.

This circuit started out as a two way data communications link for a
different project (go to www.robotwars.com), but once its completed, I =
will
be incorporating the 900mhz version into my mid-engined vehicle for data
logging.  Though laptops aren't all that heavy, I must admit, and could =
be
strapped into the car without any real disadvantage.
