Well you are right in a way.. Pressure ( MAP ) X area = force
This is balanced by spring force.. Displacement (x) = Force/ spring
constant.
The displacement (x) in a linear valve gives bypass flow.
Of course the bypass valve function is not linear.
Maybe one of the process guys can carry this further.

Point is that you should be able to achieve the same
results by using a different spring constant.
