Knock sensor interface

As part of the data-acquisition system I'm designing, I need to
interface to the knock sensor.

Having browsed the diy_efi web site and found the Intersil HIP9010,
I downloaded and read the data sheet and AN9770 application note.

Comparatively-speaking; I'm none the wiser. :-(

How do I determine the significant background and knock sensor
frequency bandwidths?

Should I just "suck it and see" based on "guesstimates"?

Any pointers to relevant resources would be welcome.
