Crank Angle Sensor

Hi all.

I'm new to the list and am trying to learn, so here it goes.

I'd like to know how a crank angle sensor works.  Does it bolt to the cam
pulley?  Is it an IR xceiver pair?  And what type of signal does it output?
Seems like a CAS could solve quite a few of the problems I'm looking at, if
it is what I think it is.
