Using a knock sensor from one engine on another

I appreciate there is no definitive answer to this question, but what's
the likelihood of a knock sensor and detection circuitry from one engine
working on another? I assume the frequency has some dependence on variables
like bore diameter and combustion chamber shape, but is the knock detection
circuitry likely to 'listen' for a wide range of frequency's or just a
narrow band?
The reason I ask this is, I've found a web site that documents the fitting
of Saab's APC unit to a Volvo engine.
http://www.teleport.com/~bertram/volvoapc/ The unit can be easily
transplanted as it's completely 'stand alone' from the ECU. The unit detects
knock and reduces the boost pressure via a solenoid valve connected to the
wastgate. If possible, I would like to use this set-up on a turbocharged
Hillman Imp engine... but I also don't want to make any expensive mistakes
along the way!
I would be very grateful for any advice, many thanks, Toby
