It is a stepper motor.  There are two windings.  You will need two
H-bridge drivers.  You need to apply "12" volts to the windings in
various polarities:

Winding A  Winding B
   +          +
   +          -
   -          -
   -          +
   +          +
...

To reverse the direction, repeat the pattern in the opposite order.

To get extra steps, try this sequence (GM doesn't do this):

Winding A  Winding B
   +          +
   +         off
   +          -
  off         -
   -          -
   -         off
   -          +
  off         +
   +          +
...
