Glassman, "Combustion", 3rd edition is current.

Ricardo, "The High Speed Internal Combustion Engine".

 Obert, "Internal Combustion Engines"

NACA papers - on the Web at naca.larc.nasa.gov

You might also check Rogowski, "Elements of Internal Combustion
Engines", Schweitzer, "Scavenging Two-Stroke Cycle Diesel Engines"
(which covers much more than the title suggests), and "Engine Dynamics
and Crankshaft Design", by Angle.

All of these are available through Inter-Library Loan if you're in the
USA.

Heywood, Heisler, and most of the others just recycle the same old
stuff these guys had down pat in the 1940s, except for Glassman.
Heywood's main problem is trying to compress entire subjects down into
single paragraphs, which sometimes causes what he says to be somewhat
different from what is said in the papers he quotes as sources. Who are
you going to believe; the guy who got paid to test-to-destruction in the
dyno room, or a professor sifting through a bunch of papers and trying
to average out the results?
