Don't laugh, it's been done, like with the pre-WWII Packard radial aero
engines. One conventional poppet valve for both intake and exhaust.
There were a couple of tricks, of course. One was lack of manifolding
- the port just opened out into the airstream. The other was direct
injection, so fuel didn't have to be mixed into the intake charge.
