Dead MAF

My '94 Z28 LT1 started running really crappy on the way home Friday, completely
shutting down when I go WOT. When I got home I fired up the laptop and FreeScan
(thanks Andy!) to find a MAF failure error code. This brings up a few questions:

1) Is there any trick for repairing these MAFs, or do they just die?
2) Since it looks like I'm going to be buying a new one, is it worth the extra
expense of getting a ported one or a free-flow one like the Grannitelli (sp?).
3) Some Z28 owners claim power improvements by descreening the MAF, anyone have
arguments pro or con?
4) The locals don't have a replacement. Anyone know of a low cost mail order
supplier?

TIA,

Bill
