You could look at the OTC scanner which is still expensive
but quite a bit less than the DRBIII one. The OTC has a model
that will flash a complete program from one of their web "service"
centers through the scanner to the pcm. I opted the model without
this capability as these downloaded program are only for 'flash' fixes
that Chrysler has in its TSBs. Like the DRBIII, you cannot alter
parts of a program unless you have the original program's code
and are able to get a scanner's company, proprietary information
on how it reads and writes to the pcm.

We, actually my son, have been working, on a very part-time basis,
on getting the program code from a '96 MP PCM to a PC for the Dakota
318 and then going through the arduous (probably impossible) task
of deciphering it.

Our approach is to bootstrap the chip (which means opening up the
case), put the chip in BDM (background debug mode), use BDM
commands to dump the program through a constructed circuit board
to the PC. Writing to the chip would be via BDM as well. To get
access to the Motorola pinouts, we are using a 'chip clip'.

We are by no means experts nor have a wealth of knowledgeable/
experience in this area so, if anyone has suggestions or opinions
on this approach, it sure would be welcomed.
