Just had another thought. I don't know how the Germans did it but the
FW190's would lay a stream of vapour out of the exhaust when they went to
WEP. That was with the JUMO engines versions. And the BF109 would leave a
noticeable trail of black smoke.

At first it even used to trick allied pilots into thinking they had a kill!!
