On the contrary. According to Bosch, many of the
issues regarding detonation with higher boost
pressures are eliminated, since in stratified mode
most of the charge won't support detonation
combustion. Bosch claims that turbocharging will
increase thermodynamic efficiency with GDI.
Of course, you have to have the extra computing power
to control the wastegate and bypass valves to give
desired boost levels all the time. From my
understanding, the amount of computing power and
complexity in a GDI system is enormous... About 4000x
as much processor power as in a typical port-injection
ECU. Yow!

GDI was developed primarily for emissions and fuel
consumption, and is expensive to implement.
Apparently you don't really lose any performance
(performance is maintained with a homogeneous mixture
mode anyway), but if you're trying to meet CAFE rating
numbers and fleet emissions, it's not critical to put
it on every car right away. So you start where it'll
make the most impact and not risk negatively affecting
power outputs.
It'll come. Give it time.

Expensive, heavy and complicated, plus there's a lot
of development time involved in putting it in a
different engine configuration... Bosch is limited to
4 cylinders right now, too, until they figure out how
to make ECUs with big power transistors and caps (for
injector driving, sound familiar?) without them
breaking a lot from vibration... Plus there's a heat
dissipation issue from the power drivers and all the
VLSI processing chips...

Nah, you just have to raise injection pressures a bit
more. Judging by what Bosch is running already, I
doubt that would be much of a problem.
