Hall-efect unit which is used for engine phase, rather
than crank angle, measurements by the stock ECU. 
Combine that with some chain snatch from the cam
chain, and you have an invitation for trouble in
trying to use the cam sensor signal for precise timing
events.

very true indeed. In fact later generations of ECU on the same engine use a sing esensor and 48-2 teeth phonic wheel. despite the cam shafts being driven by a toothed belt (so i assume rather precise) the engines suffer from hesitations at 3000-3500 RPM caused by some mechanical resonance.
