The things you list are not necessarily more advanced
technology. They are just features, built from old
technology. Anyone could build an ECU with what BMW
has going on, if they wanted to spend the extra coin
for additional bandwidth or processor power. The most
innovative thing they have going is the offset spark,
which is a great idea for a broad, flat combustion
chamber design. However, except for retard based on
knock, it appears to be an open-loop spark timing
system.

The Delphi ECU handshakes and exchanges data with at
least two other controllers on the bike (the alarm
module and the turn signal module), and uses a basic
form of ion sensing -- by far the most advanced
technology used on a motorcycle ECU of any sort.

The Motronic ECUs used on motorcycles are also very
close to being a total mystery, at least to all the
companies and tuners I have spoken with. Harley
Davidson offer software that will let you make fairly
major changes in your stock Delphi ECU's mapping, and
of course it is already adapted to a Harley v-angle
and displacement, making it a cinch for setting up on
another Harley. The original poster required that the
hardware be fully mappable, and I don't see anything
available for the BMW Motronic units that would
provide any access at all. If there's something out
there for this purpose that I don't yet know about,
I'd be very interested in hearing about it.
