[Diy_efi] Cleaning a wire harness?

I'm looking at doing the same now (cleaning up a harness), but with all of 
these suggested chemicals/cleaning agents, is it acceptable to let the 
cleaning agent come in contact with the metal pins?  Or are we carefully 
rubbing the outside of the wires only.
