Another way would be to use the Wheel abs signal if you have abs.  You
use the front wheel pulses to figure distance.  On a Corvette its 43
pulses per rotation and is available at the hub or at the abs unit.  All
you do is count the pulses.  If you do not have abs it would be easy to
get the wheel hub from an abs car and put it on the car.  Some out there
can pull the front wheels but not many so you have a much better
distance figure.  I do not think a passive count ckt would hamper the
abs working but a test run would be in order.
