Manufactures do loads of testing (like us only they get paid a bit more ;^>
and one is to confirm the air temp based on many factors determined on the
lab dyno (that has ambient climate control simulation) under real
conditions, then we hope with lots of road testing to confirm, or not so we
have more challenges!!

One that I noted was this:

Table F150, Manifold Runner Temp target Coefficient VS Airflow. With this
table performing the following calc: The manifold runner temp is estimated
by looking at the coolant temp and the bonnet temp (MAT). The runner temp
is somewhere between these two values as a function of airflow (lame but
only one table for calcs).

There are a lot of tables that effect the air flow condition final
calculations and when the MAT is relocated, all the work in the tables to
match the original application is then going to be off some, and if the
sensor is moved upstream, away from the heat of the intake manifold (that
the calcs are still comparing to), just makes for a richer mixture, that
seems to benefit some vehicle engines. But we can do this as we tune as
long as we know the fueling areas in the chip.
