As I understand it;
The 89 with the VSS Buffer was a digitial dash, and the normal cars used the 
regular, optical 2000 ppm.  90 they went to the 730 which had the option of 
both.  But, as we get newer, the signals are proceded with "finer" 
resolution,so, it was a first step to greater resolution.
