I'm doing the exact same thing.  The FI pump is in the engine compartment and 
is supplied by the mechanical.  Wasn't sure if it would work or if it was a 
good idea, but thought I'd give it a try.  I haven't done enough testing to 
know how it will work out, but no problems so far.  I'm also using the vapor 
return line as the fuel return line.
If any of this sounds like a bad idea, then please let me know before I 'find 
out the hard way'!!!
