Ecm role expanding?

The trend in ALL industries these days is to make equipment safe for
careless/stupid/suicidal operators.  No machine is COMPLETELY fool-proof,
but the automakers are just following suit with other manufacturing
sectors in making their product as "reasonably" fail-safe as possible
given current technological limitations.

I guess what's really driving this is the realization that it is cheaper
in the long run to design products this way than to pay the legal and P.R.
bills afterward..
