In part, they were to save lives, and that hasn't been born out in any
report that I've seen, ABS really allows you to steer when you would be
otherwise in a locked tire no steering mode.   But, folks in general aren't
maintaining an alternate path, so it's 2/3 defeated anyway.
For the fun part, look at how lame some of the braking systems are, and they
use the ABS to cover a underrated brake system.  96 Gran Marguis comes to
mind.
Folks still tailgate, and lack a basic idea of what defensive driving means.
The added FEELING of SECURITY just further lulls them into not pay attention
in what is going on.
  AND, alot of not being able to modulate the brakes is just do to using
various assists on them that do take the road feel out of the system.
   Watch the NASCAR boys really close.    Real close.  The systems have
enough feedback that they can modulate lock up really well, in particular
the greats are really good at it.
