Not to argue, but I've run many a TBI setup without an ESC. I just disable
code 43 and zero out the knock retard tables. Just letting you know it
doesn't seem to be a problem since my truck runs great without the ESC with
the stock ASDU bin timing tables. Of course, you have to set the timing per
GM specs and the setting has to match what's in the bin. A timing light
should agree with what the bin says. If your table says 26 degrees at idle,
then that's what the timing light should show at idle. The problem is, there
is a startup advance amount, cold bias, warm bias, etc. You really have to
understand all the issues affecting timing before you can get a handle on it.
Read BobR.'s 747spark timing only project writeup and you'll get a better
feel for what's going on. You can also read my website for a very basic
discussion on ignition and timing control. Its a summary of what I've read in
the archives mostly. Its at www.customefis.com. Look under the DIY section. JW
