Racecar Engineering had a writeup some while back about the Toyota WRC car.
As I recall, their ALS limited throttle closure to 12deg to provide airflow,
retarded spark, and injected water to control EGT.  I don't recall a mention
of dropped spark, but I doubt they'd give all their secrets away in magazine
article.
