Subject: Dyno testing turbo cars
Hi Guys,
Dyno testing is an expensive hobby and seems to be hard on the engine =
and transmission. I also feel the temperatures especially on turbo cars =
rise so quickly that any tuning modifications are likely to be =
inaccurate.
Perhaps your time on a dyno didn't have enought cool time between =
pulls. Have to let the engine temp and intercooler temps get back to =
normal whether it's on the road or on the dyno. I've got some pretty =
good fans on the Dynojet I have and believe me, I don't miss trying to =
dial in a fuel injection system on a car making 5 or 600 hp at the =
wheels in the road. Even 400 is a real pill if the conditions aren't =
perfect. With the traffic laws and traffic as they are now, I for one =
don't need a ticket for the careless and reckless along with speeding in =
excess of the speed limit anywhere in the US for trying to get a "good =
pass" down a country road to record a sound track on a tape recorder =
that I'll have to clean and alter in order to show "my pull" on the =
computor so then I can make a change and go do it again. Sure can do a =
lot of testing in a few hours and not waste one minute on the little ole =
gray haired lady, other traffic, the Law, the weather or the thousand =
other assorted problems that happen when out driving on public roads. =
Course, you are the one you have to justify your time and money too. As =
far as dyno testing being hard on the engine and transmission, in the =
last 2 years, I've killed the trans on 3 cars on the dyno in high gear =
and we've wounded 2 engines bad enough to have to tow them away. If it =
won't live on the dyno, it sure won't last long in the street.
We have more and more guys showing up and complaining that they =
can't get consistent test passes at the drag strip. Starting line =
conditions, weather changes from pass to pass, most often, just not =
enough time to make passes, ie( too many cars). In the last 14 years =
here, the traffic density has increased drasticly, then I could drive 5 =
minutes and have a diserted business park street to make a pass down, =
now it's 20 minutes to be able to pedal a car with 500 hp and not have =
to worry about pedestrians much less traffic pulling out in front of =
you.
I've found I got much more reliable results on the dyno, could =
hook up every test instrument we can think of and someone can stand =
there and watch it if we can't datalog it. Sure can't do that going down =
the road. I've run on long enough. Later, Mark
These software packages all allow you to Dyno your car on the road, =
allowing you to set your car up in normal operating temperatures.
AT least on the dyno we can correct the results to SAE or STD, But I =
rarely see 2 days in the street the same or perhaps it's not that =
important?
Any thoughts / comments, I want to go for one but am not sure which is =
best.
