You'd be able to heat your coffee off that poor chip (for the few
minutes it survives), since you're trying to drop approximately 10V at a
few amperes across a linear regulator.  Not a good idea, unless you like
trying to heatsink tens of watts of heat from a small to220 package.

The proper way to do it is to design your regulation into the switching
regulator.
