[Diy_efi] 555 monostable for tach signal?

I came across some circuits that are using a 555 in monostable mode, AC 
coupled with the (-) coil side, like

That will give a constant width pulse on pin 3 with each trigger from the 
coil. 
Anybody tried a circuit like this? (anyways... I'll give it a try on the 
weekend, along with the one suggested by Dennis)
